I was interested in this series because I had seen the 3-episode special of Cyborg 009 VS Devilman and thought oh sweet that would be cool to see more of Devilman, “This should be a fun series”. It wasn’t fun, not to say it’s bad just don’t expect to have a good feeling at the end of the series.

Devilman Crybaby makes Game of Thrones look like a happy fairy tale, that’s the best way I can summarise it without spoiling the series. It's full of sex, drugs and brutal gory killings, most of the time they happen all at once. At the start of episode 1, besides a child attempting to kill a kitten with a box cutter, you think the series is going to have a heavy force on a serial high school life with so over the top drama. Then the nightclub scene happens and you’re like “the fuck did all this come from!?”

The animation in the series at first seems really cheap and in a sense, comes across as bad, but once the series gets going it makes a lot of sense. The story is unsettling and the art style and animation reflect this, watching the series make you feel uneasy because all the imagery isn’t quite right. Plus, the action scenes are truly amazing and are as fluid and gory as you would hope for in a twisted anime like this.

If you have a strong stomach I recommend checking this series out, it’s a great story, full of philosophical questions about what makes a Human and what makes a demon. Its brutal as all hell and is very sad and tragic, I would love to see more series like this as it completely steps away from classic anime tropes and creates a unique viewing experience.
